AXIS Dance Company presents RE:SURGE
Friday, October 22, 2021 to Saturday, October 23, 2021

Oakland’s renowned AXIS Dance Company is thrilled to return to Z Space for re:surge—their first live and in-person performance in over a year. This triple-bill will feature three world premieres by prolific disabled and non-disabled choreographers:
Roots Above Ground, Marc Brew’s final work for AXIS as Artistic Director, will explore the multiple meanings of home as it peels back the layers to uncover the human need for belonging. The signature dance piece will delve deep into Marc’s own emotional journey as an immigrant, a disabled gay man, and a dancer–always moving to follow his ambition while longing to belong.
Alongside Roots is Flora Hereafter: how flowers survive, an alt waltz by 2020 Pina Bausch Fellow Neve Mazique Bianco that conjures a chosen family of flowers growing on the brink of mass extinction. Completing the evening is Hold Fast by longtime AXIS collaborator and Rehearsal Director Sonsherée Giles. This series of duets reflect on how we struggle, fight, yield, resist, and surrender to the constant changes of our landscape. We hold fast and steady ourselves as she goes.
